Is your website mobile friendly?

A website is mobile friendly when it tells the phone how to render it, loads in under about 3 seconds on mobile data, and can be read and tapped without pinching. The check that matters is not a score out of a hundred: it is whether the page has a viewport tag, whether it is served over HTTPS, and how long it takes to arrive. You can test all 3 on this site in one request, free, without giving us an address.

Google retired its own mobile-friendly test tool in December 2023, which is why the phrase returns so many broken links. The checks it ran have not gone anywhere: they moved into Search Console and into the ranking itself, which has been mobile-first since 2019.

The 4 faults worth checking

  • It does not load. A domain that has lapsed or a host that has stopped answering, which is commoner than owners expect because nothing tells you.
  • It is not encrypted. It runs over plain HTTP, so every browser marks it Not Secure before a word is read.
  • It has no viewport tag. One missing line of HTML, and the phone renders the page at desktop width and shrinks it to fit.
  • It is slow. Time to the page itself, on mobile data rather than on your office broadband.

What we found when we ran it across the country

We fetched 7,645 high street business websites across 762 UK towns, on a phone user agent, and 1,826 of them failed on at least one of those four. 1,650 had no viewport tag at all. This is not an unusual sample: it is plumbers, electricians, salons, garages and bakeries, pulled from the map rather than chosen.

How to fix each one

The viewport tag is one line in the head of the page and costs nothing. HTTPS is a free certificate from any current host and usually a single switch. Speed is almost always photographs: a picture straight off a phone is several megabytes and needs to be a few 100 kilobytes. A site that does not load at all is a hosting or domain problem, and the person who built it can usually restore it in an hour.

If the site fails and nobody is left who can fix it, we will build you a new one before you pay anything and send it over finished. From £47 a month with VAT, hosting and every change included.

Not as a standalone tool. It was retired in December 2023. The same checks live in Search Console's page experience reporting, and mobile rendering has been the basis of Google's index since 2019.

Under about 3 seconds to the page on mobile data is a reasonable working bar for a small business site. Past 5 seconds you are losing a meaningful share of visitors before anything renders.

One line of HTML that tells a phone to render the page at the phone's own width. Without it the page is laid out for a desktop and scaled down, so the text is too small to read and the buttons too small to hit.

All 6 questions 1 / 3

Talk us through all six.

Press record once and answer the 6 below. Take as long as you like.

  • What do you do, and who for? Example: I am a plumber. Mostly emergency callouts for homeowners, some landlords.
  • Which towns do you cover? Name the places you would actually drive to, or the postcodes you work.
  • What jobs do you want the phone to ring for? The work you want more of, and not everything you are able to do.
  • Why do people pick you over the next name on the list? Say it the way you would say it standing in somebody's kitchen.
  • What should someone do when they land on your site? Ring you, fill in a form for a quote, or send a message?
  • Anything you want it to look like? A site you like, the colour on your van, or nothing at all. Nothing at all is a fine answer.

Any order is fine. Say something twice, come back to a thing you forgot, stop to think. It all stays in one recording and we sort it out at our end.
